ISSUE 7: [-]M-A-S-K

Summer 2027

Edited By: Noémie Despland-Lichtert and Brendan Sullivan Shea

Roughly 10 years after the publication of the first issue, this edition of m-a-s-k-s invites contributors to re-explore, re-think, or re-arrange the theme of “mask” itself in a contemporary light, thereby revealing a wide range of concepts, representations, and translations.

[-]m-a-s-k, the theme of the forthcoming issue, seeks contributions across a broad range of formats to critically address subjects & topics in design, architecture, landscape, cartography, coding, and beyond. The issue aims to uncover forgotten histories, make visible lesser-known narratives, and unveil experimental representations. Special attention will be given to questions of disguise, anonymity, trust, public health, contested personas, social negotiation, rumors, and murmurs. The theme is meant to be understood in its most open-ended, most inclusive form - from but not exclusively the theatrical symbol of disguise, camouflage, and costume to the personal protective equipment of the pandemic, a symbol of solidarity, or an apparatus of concealed identity, as well as building envelopes, architectural camouflage, scaffolding and facadism.

[-]m-a-s-k calls for contributions, whether penned under a proper name or a nom de plume, broadly exploring architecture and the built, natural, and cultural landscape in relation to the theme.
